As an experienced traveler, I have explored my fair share of beautiful locations worldwide. But there’s something about Split, Croatia that captured my heart and left me wanting more.
Here’s what to expect when you visit Split, Croatia: breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea, fascinating historical sites such as Diocletian’s Palace, lively bars and restaurants serving up traditional Croatian dishes, and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in the Mediterranean sunshine. All travel tips will make your trip to Split truly remarkable trip! Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday or an action-packed adventure.
Diocletian’s Palace
Diocletian’s Palace is one of the most popular cultural and tourist attractions in Split. You can access the palace grounds for free, as it is part of the city and covers a total area of 40000 m2. However, you will need to pay an admission fee to enter any building within the palace grounds.
Traveler Tip: Definitely get a guided walking tour. The old town is full of history.
Podrum (Cellars)
Under the Diocletian’s Palace were the Podrum (Cellars). The cellars were strong substructures that supported the apartments and stored wine, food, and other items used by the Palace. It can be reached through the Bronze Gate. The Western part of the Podrum is open to tourists and used for fairs and exhibitions.
Church of Our Lady of the Bell Tower
It is possible to climb up the Church of Our Lady of the Bell Tower. Absolutely magnificent 360 degrees view of the city from the top of the tower. There were 186 steps up. The first part is apparently the original stairs. Steep and narrow. Then follow by modern steel steps and platforms. It is a long way up though so a good pair of walking shoes is a must. To avoid the crowds and queues you should go very early.
Traveler Tip: If you are claustrophobic or bothered by heights, climbing up to the tower is not recommended. One passage is very narrow and steep.
Cathedral of St. Domnius
The Cathedral of St. Domnius is the oldest (Dates to 305AD) in the world and unsurprisingly still a place of worship. Stunning 4th-century church in the heart of Palace. It is small but the architecture is stunning. It is for sure the highlight of the town. You will need to purchase ticket to get inside of Cathedral.
The tickets box is in the opposite side of the Perystile. There are 4 ticket types available:
- Blue ticket (6.63 euro) includes 3 sites: The Cathedral, Crypt, Baptistery
- Green ticket (9.29 euro) includes 3 sites: The Cathedral, Bell Tower, Treasury
- Red ticket (7.96 euro) includes 4 sites: The Cathedral, Crypt, Baptistery, Treasury
- Purple ticket (10.61 euro) includes all 5 sites: The Cathedral, Crypt, Baptistery, Treasury, Bell tower
Traveler Tip: Mass last Sunday morning at 9:30, Cathedral and the bell tower are both closed. Check the times before you go.
Marjan Park
If you love nature and outdoor activities, Marjan Park is for you. Beautiful scenery and easy to access from the town of Split on foot. The total Marjan path is about 1700 meters (1.05 Miles). It is ideal for families with small children because there are no cars. Marjan Par is an ideal spot for families with small kids. Not only is there no need to worry about cars, but it’s also a comfortable environment for both walking and biking.
Travel Tip: Use the road train from the Golden Gate if the walk and hill would be too much for you. Keep in mind, the train and buses only run during the peak season.
Riva Promenade
Take a leisurely stroll at the Riva promenade and feel the sea breeze! The waterfront is decorated with beautiful palm trees & benches that add to its charm. There are many delightful shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars nearby for you to choose from. the sunrise or right before sunset is the best time for a romantic walk. Though always crowded with tourists.
Travel Tip: The prices are a little more expensive compared to the inner city. But the views alone make it all worth it.
Bouns Tip: Don’t be afraid to haggle a bit when you are shopping in Split. It’s common practice in Croatia, and you may be able to get a better price on souvenirs or other items.
Bikes / E-bikes / E-Scooters
You’ve probably noticed the abundance of bikes, electric bikes (or e-bikes), or e-scooters that zip around the Riva Promenade. They offer a quiet and eco-friendly way to see Split. You can cover a lot of ground, including the hills in Marjan Park. You are able to rent them from the company, or you can join a bike tour with a guide.
It’s important to keep an eye out for e-bikes when you walk around town. They can be traveling at a pretty good clip, and it’s easy to get caught off guard if you’re not paying attention.
