Easter is an important national holiday in Croatia, as it is predominantly Catholic. You may not be aware that all Christians celebrate major holidays on the same day. For 2023, Easter will be marked in Dubrovnik on 9th April 2023. On Sundays, many shops and markets will be closed. If a store was closed on Sunday, chances are it will also be shut down on Monday. In the best-case scenario, they might just reduce their working hours that day.
Local Traditions
The week before Easter, Dubrovnikians celebrate Cvijetnica (or Cvjetna Nedjelja). Literally translated, it means “Flower Sunday.” Families prepare water in a large bowl or washbowl on this special day and add flower petals to it before washing their faces in it as each member of their household awakes. Girls are blessed with palm branches braided into braids and olive branches during mass on Palm Sunday.
