More than just Game of Thrones — Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik Travel Guide

Dubrovnik is much more than a filming location for Game of Thrones. It is a remarkable city of history, culture, and beauty. Located on the Adriatic Sea in southern Croatia, Dubrovnik is an old city with a rich and storied past. Founded in the 7th century, Dubrovnik has seen its share of invasions, occupations, and wars, but has always managed to rise again and maintain its unique charm and beauty. From its stunning architecture and charming cobblestone streets to its vibrant culture and cuisine, Dubrovnik is a must-see destination for travelers from all over the world. Whether you’re a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or a fan of Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik has something to offer everyone.

And while other travel blogs provide great advice for attractions, day trips, and restaurants – I hope that my Dubrovnik travel tips & experiences can make your vacation truly extraordinary. Something you will remember for years later!

AirBnB or Hotel?

Airbnb is ideal if you plan to visit Dubrovnik and take day trips, but hotels may be better suited for you if you plan on visiting other countries or locations after Dubrovnik. Hotels also provide luggage storage — it’s much safer to store it there instead of lugging it along cobblestone roads. Even after check-out, the bellman will still be more than happy to help out with any requests!

There are more than Old Town

The old town of Dubrovnik is beautiful, but you should also visit the other sites. The old town is beautiful but there’s more to the city than people realize. This is definitely a mistake to avoid when visiting Dubrovnik.

You can view Dubrovnik by taking a hike up Mount Srd (or the cable car). You can explore the abandoned Hotel Belvedere, or take a boat ride to Lokrum Island.

Water Shoes are a MUST

Dubrovnik’s beaches are pebbly and rocky and have some very harsh underwater terrain. The locals are used to this kind of beach. A pair of well-fitted water shoes will transform your beach experience. You will be able to move in the water without feeling restricted and protected from sea urchins. They are quite common along the Croatian coast.

Where to Get Free Wifi

Dubrovnik boasts free WiFi throughout most public spaces such as its main square and dining establishments. Furthermore, many cafes thrive here as part of their unique cafe culture. It’s a completely different story at Dubrovnik Airport. Wifi is NOT free at the airport. Here is an example of wireless service:

Internet Service 1h- 7,00 Euro
Internet Service 30 minutes – 4,00 Euro
Internet Service 15min, 2.00 Euro

In most cases, download speeds range from 4Mb/s up to 10Mb/s. Croatia’s DSL network is one of Europe’s slowest and costliest. Their internet prices are 30 percent higher than the European average. And their data transfer speeds are at the bottom of Europe.

Tourist Etiquette

People in Dubrovnik are hospitable and warm, yet they expect respectful behavior from visitors. Taking liberties is not tolerated. Whenever possible, try not to drag your wheeled suitcase on the cobblestone path during the late hours of the night. This will be beneficial for yourself as well as the people living in and around the area. It is noisy and can cause damage to ancient stone. Even if you’ve spotted something breathtaking (which you will often), try to keep your feet from blocking paths and pavements. Be aware of others who are just trying to live their day.

Beat the Crowds — Plan Ahead!

It is best to avoid arriving at cruise ships during peak hours. If two cruise ships arrive at the same time, up to 9,000 people can come ashore at once. And sometimes could be more. Morning ships dock between 6–9 am and afternoon vessels dock at 2 pm.

It is also better to avoid the peak season, May-October if you don’t enjoy large crowds. Check the local visitor stat website for the most crowded days & times. This will help you plan ahead and make adjustments if needed.

When is the best time to go?

No matter the season or your travel goals, Dubrovnik can always deliver. If beach weather and massive crowds of tourists are what draws you most then the summer high season could be ideal. otherwise, if authentic Dubrovnik experiences and events like Christmas festivals appeal more, winter off-season trips would likely provide better options.

As someone who has visited Dubrovnik during all three tourism seasons, I highly suggest going during its shoulder season: May or September are my personal favorite months as they provide plenty of warm temperatures that allow people to swim freely while also experiencing all that Dubrovnik offers without being overwhelmed by tourists.

Taxi, Bus, or Uber?

It’s essential to be mindful when taking taxis, as some companies may charge different rates for tourists and locals. Uber is a better option in this case.

When traveling to the airport, you have the choice of taking a bus, arranging an Uber, or opting for a taxi. Before you decide to take the bus, make sure you check out the locations of the stops. The city’s majority is located on a hill. Although it may not be far from your hotel, it can be quite a hike with your luggage.

Table Cover Charge? Tip or no Tip?

Tipping for excellent service at restaurants, bars, and cafes in Croatia – particularly touristy or business areas – is customary and appreciated. Some establishments may charge per-head fees/table cover charges; be sure to inquire prior to making a reservation. Tipping may also be appropriate at hotels and serviced apartments or places like spas and salons where staff might otherwise not receive enough compensation. These tips should always be appreciated!

Tipping in Croatia depends on where and what services you purchase. Generally, tip around 10% of your bill as an estimate. To show appreciation if exceptional service was delivered, consider tipping 15-20% more as a thank-you gesture.

Hopefully, this guide has prepared you for your upcoming trip to Dubrovnik. With its stunning beauty, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant nightlife, this city is the perfect destination for all types of travelers. Enjoy your stay!
